COSTA RICA 018

In an effort to encourage young eco-explorers to pursue careers in science, our sister company Chelonia Eco-Adventures is announcing “Costa Rican Adventure”, a series of immersive adventures designed to promote an understanding and appreciation of biology, with renowned scientists, educators, animal rescuers, and naturalists serving as instructors and role models.

COSTA RICA 140

Your adventure begins where the road ends! Participants will have the incredible opportunity to experience long term National Geographic scientist-Dr. Brady Barr’s and wife and owner of EcoAdventures Mei Len Sanchez-Barr’s, very own Private Reserve “Nama Laka” (Meaning the land of jaguars in ancient Bri Bri language). Nama Laka consists of 150 acres of very remote, pristine rainforest, crystal clear rivers and streams, waterfalls and giant trees, and abundant wildlife including: 3 species of monkeys, poison dart frogs, green winged macaws, toucans, endangered tapir, ocelots, morpho butterflies and more!  Nama Laka borders over 100,000 acres of the National Park, Braullio Carillo, one of Costa Rica’s largest protected areas.  We cannot guarantee what animals or experiences you will be blessed with, but what we can guarantee, is that this will be a private experience for you and your party.  This will be your very own private Eden during your stay.  You will not see or hear humanity at Nama Laka, other than the local neighbors…vaquaros (cowboys) riding the road or driving their cattle. Experiencing Nama Laka is like going back in time.  Here, owing to the remoteness of the area, and primitive dirt road, residents of the area utilize horseback or ox cart to travel the region during their daily lives.  So you will climb aboard a “chapulin” (open air tractor) which will navigate the dirt roads and cross the swift streams, all while you enjoy the spectacular scenery in route (temporary delays sometimes occur if you come across vaquaros driving their cattle down the road…but no worries, it is a fantastic picture opportunity and memory you won’t soon forget.  Before you know it you will arrive at the treehouse lodge, where accommodations are 25 feet up in an open-air platform where you won’t just experience nature…you will be a part of it.

EXPERIENCE THE EXTRAORDINARY!! This is no ordinary experience. At Nama Laka, take amazing hikes through you own private forest where you will neither see nor hear any other signs of humans.  This is adventure on the wild side!  Cleanse your soul with a hike to one of the largest trees on earth (over 30 meters around…as best as we can estimate), swim in crystal clear cool mountain streams, or lounge in your own private pool beneath a spectacular plunging waterfall, all within easy access of your private treehouse lodge.  In addition, guests can participate in camera trapping species ID research and assist with lodge project improvements.  If  available for releases, you can be a part of a heart warming animal release back into the wild from Centro herpetologico de Costa Rica rescue facility.  For the extreme adventurer, study local caiman up close and personal, take a night hike and eye shine them. travel to the East coast to meet our friends at The Sloth Sanctuary. Meet famous “Buttercup” and Director Judy and friends from Discovery Channel’s “Meet the Sloths show”.  Take an in-depth behind-the- scenes tour of the rescue facility, nursery/NICU, slothpital,  sloth play pens and take a guided tour of the rainforest canals to look for sloths and other wildlife.  Lazy around in the white –or black-beaches of the Caribbean. End your experience at the luxurious Pachiro Lodge in Tortugero . Take a boat ride through a series of canals in the jungle to get to a riverside lodge where participants will experience a thrilling zip line experience, take guided jungle canal tours, hikes, and tour the town. Enjoy the tropical atmosphere of Pachira Lodge and the sea turtle shaped pool overlooking the water. During the night, creep up and gaze upon giant nesting Green sea turtles (and if we are lucky-leatherbacks) with expert guides.   Go home with new found confidence, knowledge of animals and careers in biology/ecology, and independence. This could possibly be a defining, life-changing moment, an experience of a lifetime and one you will never forget.

A Typical Day on the Reserve:

Typical Day at Nama Laka:  This is living with nature at it’s best…rustic living conditions: no air conditioning, no TV, and lots and lots of wildlife!

Howler monkeys and sounds of tropical birds and parrots will wake you up at dawn- Then grab that Costa Rican cup of coffee and take a stroll around the reserve to bird watch while we get breakfast ready.  Take nice cool or warm refreshing shower in the enclosed but open window shower as the local wildlife (poison dart frogs may visit you in the shower)

Have a traditional Breakfast with “Gallo Pinto” Beans and rice fried eggs, bacon, or a simple bowl of cheerios with fresh tropical fruit made by your host.  However, you have free reign of the fridge and cabinets to make whatever you want!

During the day- take a hike to the river, float around or fish- Visit the waterfalls, have a picnic lunch, or take the epic journey to “EL REY” the biggest tree in the area following a beautiful stream full of wildlife!  Help researchers with tracking animals, and collecting data from camera traps, plant trees and epiphytes, …late afternoon is basically a free period to relax in a hammock and watch hummingbirds eat from the feeders.

With students, everyone helps prepare dinner! Then we all eat together family-style! With family groups, you have a dinner menu prepared for you by your hosts.

It gets dark quick so pull out your candles and headlamps and play a game of cards, tell stories on the deck…then lights out as you will be ready for a comfy bed indeed!
